Why is there always water in the air dryer?

3 Common Causes and What You Should Check

A refrigerated air dryer is designed to remove moisture from compressed air. But what if your dryer keeps running and you still find water in your air pipes or downstream equipment?

This does not always mean the dryer is faulty. Several operating conditions may affect its performance. Here are three common causes worth checking.

1. High Inlet Air Temperature

When compressed air enters the dryer at a temperature higher than its rated limit, the cooling system may struggle to handle the additional heat load.

What to check:

  • Measure the actual inlet air temperature.

  • Check whether the air compressor has a suitable aftercooler.

  • Make sure the dryer operates within its rated temperature range.

2. Condensate Drain Problems

During the cooling process, moisture condenses into liquid water and needs to be discharged through the drain system.

If the drain is blocked, damaged, or not working correctly, collected water may remain inside the dryer and enter the downstream air system.

What to check:

  • Inspect the automatic drain.

  • Check for blockages or dirt.

  • Confirm that condensate is discharged properly.

3. Incorrect Dryer Sizing or Excessive Airflow

If the actual compressed air flow exceeds the dryer’s rated capacity, the dryer may not provide sufficient moisture removal.

Remember that inlet temperature, working pressure, and ambient conditions can also affect the dryer’s actual capacity.

What to check:

  • Compare actual airflow with the dryer’s rated capacity.

  • Check working pressure and inlet temperature.

  • Make sure the dryer is correctly selected for your application.
