Introduction to Refrigerated Dryers

Refrigerated air dryers, the industry’s mainstream compressed air dryers, cool and dehumidify air to condense and expel water vapor.

1.Working principle: A process of “cooling and dehumidifying”

A closed-loop process completes cooling, condensing, separating, and heating in four steps.

Pre-cooling: Hot, humid air enters the air-to-air heat exchanger, where it transfers heat to the outgoing cold, dry air. This achieves initial cooling and recovers cold energy.

Deep Cooling: The pre-cooled air then flows into the air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger, where the refrigeration system cools it to about +3°C. This condenses water vapor into liquid.

Separation and Drainage: The air and condensed mist pass through a high-efficiency gas-liquid separator, which uses centrifugal force and impact to fully separate the liquid. An automatic drain valve then discharges the water.

Reheating for Output: The dried, cold air returns to the air-to-air heat exchanger, absorbing heat from the incoming hot air to reach near-room temperature. This reheating step prevents external pipe condensation.

2.Key features: sufficient, economical, reliable

Moderate Drying: Pressure dew point ranges from +2°C to +10°C, covering most standard industrial needs but falling short of adsorption dryers’ -40°C deep drying.

Lower Costs: Initial investment and long-term maintenance cost less than adsorption dryers. Fewer moving parts—mainly a refrigeration compressor—keep maintenance simple.

Stable and Reliable: Mature technology supports continuous operation across most industrial settings.

Energy-Efficient Upgrades: Newer models feature variable frequency drive (VSD) technology, which adjusts compressor speed to match air load, saving energy at partial loads and stabilizing dew point. Thermomass-type dryers use phase-change materials to store cold energy, allowing intermittent compressor operation for further efficiency.

Temperature Limitation: Cooling above freezing risks internal icing in very low ambient temperatures or at very low air volumes, restricting use in special conditions.

3.Applicable scenarios: Covers the vast majority of industrial sectors

Refrigerated air dryers serve as a versatile, cost-effective industrial solution for most standard applications, including:

  • General Manufacturing – supplies dry air to pneumatic tools, control systems, cylinders, and valves, preventing wear and corrosion.

  • Surface Treatment – delivers oil-free, water-free air for painting and coating, ensuring finish quality.

  • Light Industry & Textiles – supports stable pneumatic equipment operation in textile, chemical fiber, and apparel production.

  • Food & Packaging – meets basic air quality needs in processing, bottling, and packaging.

  • Other Sectors – extends to electronics, chemicals, rubber, building materials, printing, and more.
